Scenes From An Imaginary Western

My art, My Stories

Don’t Look Ethel! It’s the ‘Painting of the Day’! (Friday edition) June 24, 2011

Howdy! I missed yesterday’s post. Sorry about that, I was thinking about pissing in the ocean…anyway, this is the very first Confidence Man painting. It’s a funeral. A viking funeral. In the upper left corner, the Confidence Man watches from the top of a ridge. At first, he wasn’t in the painting at all, then I went back and added him in. Thus, a saga was born, or at least a four and a half year waste of time. When you look at the piece, think ‘Kid A’ by Radiohead. That’s what I was listening to at the time. Cheers!

The Arcade Fire love…’The Painting of the Day’ (Wednesday edition) June 22, 2011

Good morning! Today I have another painting from the ‘Fallow Ground’ series. It’s the biggest painting (I think) in the whole series, and one of the largest pieces I’ve ever done. I won’t go into all the symbolism I’ve loaded this thing down with, but I will say that I had a specific goal in mind when I started the piece: to make something that was so busy that it was difficult to look at. Seems like a strange goal, but I was listening to ‘Trout Mask Replica’ (Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band) a lot at the time so, you know…it just seemed like the right thing to do. I think I succeeded, at least a little. Have a great one!

It Wasn’t the Bullet that Laid Him to Rest it was…’The Painting of the Day’ (Tuesday edition) June 21, 2011

Hello. You may remember the first painting in this series (‘Partly Cloudy 72’). Well, here’s part two. Just for the hell of it. If you don’t know, the title of the piece (and what’s playing on the radio of the car as the sun goes down) is a song by Traffic. Here it is in all it’s 11 and a half minute glory The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys(give it a minute once you press play because the song fades in quietly). Listen and repeat. Have a great day everybody!

Something’s Calling You, I Think It Might Be…’The Painting of the Day’ (Monday edition) June 13, 2011

Hope everybody had a great weekend! Well, I have something a little different for you today. It’s one of the pieces from the series before the Confidence Man: ‘Fallow Ground’. This one is called ‘Seeing the Elephant’, and it’s sort of about the Civil War and the South, but really it just uses those things as a stepping stone into something else. I mean ‘Moby Dick’ isn’t really about a guy obsessed with a whale is it? No. The title ‘Seeing the Elephant’ refers mostly to experiencing combat for the first time, or learning a very hard lesson. ‘We have seen the elephant, gentlemen…’. This painting will always be tied to Nick Cave’s album ‘Henry’s Dream’. I was listening to it incessantly at the time. The dark Gothic (like Poe, not Marilyn Manson) feel of the record seemed to line up perfectly with this piece. Have a good day everyone!

Simmer Down, Simmer Down, It’s Just the ‘Painting of the Day’ (Friday edition) June 10, 2011

Hey everybody! I have another Confidence Man painting for you today. This one is from the Navigator story arc. The girl is the same one who was hanging by her teeth from the high wire. It’s always the same girl, no matter what disguise she may be wearing. That’s a hint. Anyway, today she’s a nurse. On the table is the Confidence Man. Hovering over him is the Navigator. Drifting through this dreamscape is a buffalo. This is one of the stranger Confidence Man paintings, but, I think, one of the most effective. It also contains some of my favorite nods to rock and roll. The title ‘Sick Again’ is the name of the last song on Led Zeppelin’s ‘Physical Graffiti’. The idea for the girl being a nurse came from the Sonic Youth album ‘Sonic Nurse’, and, finally, the mascara running down her cheek came courtesy of P. J. Harvey (who I was listening to at the time I painted this). Have a great weekend people!

Good Morning! It’s the ‘Painting of the Day’ (Wednesday edition) June 8, 2011

Hey everybody! I have a Confidence Man painting for you today. This one is from the ‘Artificial Heart’ story arc and is sort of a dream. The Confidence man has stumbled onto this scene and is too late to stop whatever happened here. If you’ll notice, there are two figures walking off in the distance and to the left of the wolf, hogs are feeding on the remains of the white horse that the Confidence man had as a child. There is another body as well. Of course, the Confidence man knows the person sprawled in the snow. It wouldn’t be much of a story if he didn’t, now would it? Have a great one everybody!

I Saw the Light and Fell in Love with…’The Painting of the Day’ (Tuesday edition) June 7, 2011

Happy Tuesday folks. We might need to start wearing gas masks here in Santa Fe because of all the smoke from the Arizona fires. Hack, cough. Anyway, I have a painting for you today. It’s from the Confidence Man series and it’s actually kinda sexy (in a weird, guy floating over the bed, flaming hands sort of way). This is more of the love triangle (not really an appropriate term) between the father, the son and this woman (she was spinning from the wire in an earlier post). Ginger has always been a big fan of this one. I kinda like it, too. Have a great day!
